Health care is ALWAYS in the headlines, but it's often difficult to figure out what is really being said. Here's your chance to hear experts discuss the Headlines in Healthcare, have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about Canada's health care system, what the current issues are and how we can build a better future.
12:00pm - Registration and Opening Remarks: Students for Medicare
12:30pm - Dr. Michael Rachlis: Medicare and its Sustainability
Everywhere we turn, we are being told that health care as we know it in Canada is unsustainable. Dr. Michael Rachlis prides himself on proving that this is not true. He is also an advocate for solving the issues our healthcare system faces within a publicly-funded model. He will discuss recent headlines in healthcare, dispel myths about Medicare being unsustainable, and discuss solutions for the future.
1:45pm – Snack Break
2:00pm - 3:00pm - Workshops: Choose one of three
1. Are User Fees Really That Bad? - Ahmed Bayoumi, MD, MSc, FRCPC
As the province of Quebec tried to initiate user fees this year, the pros and cons of user fees made it ALL over the headlines! Come find out what they mean, why they seem appealing and why they may not be as effective as they claim to be.
2. What's Wrong With Private Clinics? - Gordon Guyatt, BSc, MD, MSc, FRCPC
Private clinics are popping up all over the place! Private clinics cataract surgeries, hip replacements, and now even to replace your family doctor! This workshop will examine the evidence for and against such services.
3. The Problem with Our Retirement Homes and Aging Population - Sara Clemens, RN, MN,
The health of our aging population runs beyond their care in hospitals. It entails ensuring our seniors have adequate access to appropriate services and housing outside of the hospital. What implications does the emergence of two-tier retirement homes have on our aging population, and on the health care system at large?
3:00pm - Keynote, Prof. David McNally: Healthcare, Headlines and the World at Large
Worldwide, we are seeing an austerity agenda and a push towards service cut-backs and privatization. What does this mean for healthcare here in Canada and how do we interpret the push for privatization as part of a global agenda? Prof. David McNally is a renowned speaker and author, and will conclude the conference with an in-depth look at healthcare in Canada as it fits within the world at large and how social movements are shaping the response.
